Soprano Sarah Gabriel made her European debut in 2010/11 at Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris, playing Eliza Doolittle opposite Alex Jennings as Higgins in Robert Carsen’s celebrated new production of My Fair Lady (described in Le Monde as ‘as fine an actress as she is a singer’). Born in London, Sarah read English at Cambridge.
An alumna of Lorin Maazel’s Chateauville Foundation young artist programme, she made her acclaimed US debut conducted by Maazel, playing Lucy Lockit in Britten’s The Beggar’s Opera, returning as guest principal artist to his Castleton Festival. Further operatic appearances include Anne Trulove/The Rake’s Progress, The Governess/The Turn of the Screw, Mandane in the 280-year revival of Hasse’s Artaserse, Morgana/Alcina, Le Feu in Ravel’s L’enfant et les sortileges, and Jerusha in Gerald Barry’s masterpiece, The Intelligence Park.
Sarah has performed song of all periods at venues including Wigmore Hall, the South Bank, across Europe, and in the USA and Asia. Work with ensemble includes Schoenberg Pierrot Lunaire, Walton Facade, Britten Cabaret Songs, Schoenberg String Quartet no 2 with The Finzi Quartet and Ensemble 360, and contemporary orchestral songs with London Sinfonietta.
Highlights at the start of the 2012/13 season include a broadcast and documentary for the BBC, Webern songs with London Sinfonietta at the QEH, Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Grand Opera Thailand, Poulenc’s monologue opera La Voix Humaine, appearing as the singer in the world premiere of Rambert Dance Company's new 2012 show, Labyrinth of Love, a new orchestral song cycle by Michael Daugherty, a world premiere by Yuko Katori at the Linbury/ROH, and her film debut in Brigitte Rouan’s ‘Tu honoreras ta mere et ta mere’, to be released in 2013. www.sarahgabriel.eu
As a soloist, song accompanist, chamber musician and orchestral pianist, Yshani has performed at venues including the Wigmore Hall, the Purcell Room, LSO St. Luke’s and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and at events including the Soundings Platform for Contemporary Music and the Oxford Lieder Festival.
Yshani was awarded Yamaha Birmingham Accompanist of the Year 2009 and is a current Park Lane Group Artist. She works regularly with dancers, having worked with English National Opera/Fabulous Beast on their production of The Rite of Spring and she has recently been appointed company pianist at Rambert Dance Company.
Yshani studied at the Royal College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama under John Barstow, Caroline Palmer and Andrew West. She is now a member of staff at the Royal College of Music Junior Department, teaching Musicianship and Composition.
