The Artist:
Maksim Shtsura - (Piano): was born in Estonia and began the piano at the age of six. He studied with Ivari Ilja at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, graduating with a BMus with distinction. He is currently studying with Gordon Fergus-Thompson on the MMus programme at the Royal College of Music, supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council Studentship, the Estonian Capital of Culture Study Award and the Kristjan Jaak Scholarship. In 2008-09, he was an Erasmus exchange student at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg, where he studied with Volker Banfield. In 2008 Maksim was awarded a scholarship for participating in The International Holland Music Sessions Summer Academy.
He has won prizes in several national and international competitions, including the Republican Competition for young pianists in Tartu, Estonia (1998)–III prize, the International Frederic Chopin piano competition in Narva, Estonia (2000)–I prize, the International Jevgeny Mravinski Competition in Saint Petersburg, Russia (2001)–laureate title, the International competition “Young musician” in Tallinn, Estonia (2002)–III prize, the Steinway-Klavierspiel-Wettbewerb in Hamburg, Germany (2004)–I prize and public award and The 7th Estonian Piano Competition–I prize, and additionally, was awarded both a Yamaha (2008) and a Helmi Valtman (2010) scholarships.
Maksim has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in Estonia, Russia, Germany, Austria, Holland and the United Kingdom. During his period of study he has taken part in Master Classes with many renowned teachers and performers including Barry Douglas, Nina Seryogina, Philip Kawin, Tatjana Szebanova, Veera Gornostayeva and Daniel Pollack.
