Most piano music is written with the ideal of the grand piano in mind. Einojuhani Rautavaara's piece explores the timbral possibilities of the far more common upright piano, utilising the internal strings and the pedals as well as the keyboard. Rautavaara's inspirations come from pop, jazz and folk as well as 'serious' music, and his music is extremely beautiful without being banal or blatantly superficial. A very challenging piece with extended notation.
