YFL-272 Student Flute

Why we love it…

The 272 is like the 212 but with open holed keys. Open holes encourage good hand position, and the added E mechanism makes top E easier to play. Going straight from a flute with covered keys to open holes can take some time. Our 272 flutes come with foam pads so that you don’t have to go from 0-100 if you don’t want to. I’d advise cutting down gradually, starting with the pads for index fingers and perhaps leaving the G and D enabling pads on until you get used to it.

Overview

Our Custom and Professional grade flutes have earned a reputation for exceptional quality, design, performance and consistency, thanks to the craftsmanship of our brass and woodwind workshops.

Our Student models inherit many of the same hallmarks - but, to aid new flautists, our Student flutes are designed and shaped to encourage best-technique, as well as offering superb playability. For instance, we've designed the lip plate to guide beginners toward proper breath utilisation and keys with extensively tested dimensions and angles for optimum balance and easy playability. These and other details are some of the reasons why our Student flutes have become bestsellers worldwide.

The YFL-272 features ring keys, an offset G key and has a Split-E mechanism. This is the standard edition with a silver-plated nickel silver headjoint and lip plate.

Questions & Answers

Ask a Question:

Answer

Hi Alexis, thank you for your question. All of our YFL-200 model flutes are made to the same high specification - the model numbers denote differences in styling or operation:

  • YFL-212: Has covered keys, an offset-G, a Split-E mechanism
  • YFL-222: Has covered keys, an offset-G (no Split-E mechanism)
  • YFL-262: Has ring keys, an offset-G (no Split-E mechanism)
  • YFL-272: Has ring keys, an offset-G, a Split-E mechanism
  • YFL-282: Has ring keys, an inline-G (no Split-E mechanism)

So the YFL-212 and YFL-272 are identical except that the YFL-212 has covered keys which are easier to use (especially for beginners who are still learning finger positioning) whereas the YFL-272 has ring keys which require more finesse and accuracy. Ring keys can sometimes be difficult for young children whose fingers can't always physically cover the keys; at the same time, ring keys can offer an experienced flautist more exact control over tone (as you're able to control how much of the key you cover).

For a beginner, the YFL-212 is the most popular.
